Break It First

Store product file checker

Finds what would break your product import while it is still a file.

Covers: your product file before import. Doubtful rows go to a person, and the checks stop at the file.

Limit: No live import was run and no store was involved. The checks stop at the file.

What you get

  • This kit, set up on your data after a written brief.
  • Its test report: what we broke, what caught it and what got through.
  • A plain list of its limits, and a report or log after every run, so you can check the counts the next day.

What we need from you

  • A sample export, or access to a test copy of the tools it connects.
  • A written brief: what it should do and where you think it breaks.

Price: from $49, fixed quote in writing before any work.

Timing: the written quote states the delivery date.

The problem

A product file with hand-renamed columns, a duplicate variant or a blank price can stop an import, or let wrong listings through. A blank inventory number can turn into zero without anyone noticing.

What we broke

  • We fed it a made-up product file with hand-renamed columns. Result: 49 errors and 42 warnings, NOT READY.
  • We ran the converter and checked the new file. Result: 0 errors and 1 warning, ready to import by these checks.
  • To get there, 5 of the 15 listings were not written. They sit in a 19-item review file, each with its reason.
  • We left inventory numbers blank or wrote them in words. A blank is never turned into zero. The row goes to a person.
  • We planted 20 bugs in its code. The tests caught 20 of 20.

Before / after runStore product file checker

Short video, no sound. The slides below show the same steps.
  1. Hook: made-up hand-renamed Shopify file, 49 errors. Checker line: Result 49 errors, 42 warnings, NOT READY. Our own test run.
  2. Checker report, hand-renamed file: not valid UTF-8, unknown category, bad inventory policy, bad price. Result: 49 errors, 42 warnings, NOT READY.
  3. Converter review list: two fixes (encoding, photo link) and two dropped rows (repeated option values, blank price).
  4. After: Result 0 errors, 1 warning, READY TO IMPORT by these checks. 66 tests passed and 20 of 20 planted bugs caught.
  5. Limits: the checks stop at the file; no live import was run. Follow for one tested kit at a time.

What it does after the fix

It checks the file against the rules on Shopify's public help page and converts what it can. It writes a report and a review list that says what the converter fixed or dropped, and why. What it cannot fix goes to a person. It does not guess.

Limits

  • No live import was run and no store was involved. The checks stop at the file.
  • The rules come from Shopify's public help page. Not affiliated with Shopify.
  • Our own demo kit, run on made-up data.

What happens after you write

  1. You write

Email us or send a DM on X: what it does and where you think it breaks.

  2. We ask a few questions

About your tools, your data and what counts as done.

  3. Fixed written quote

The quote states the price and the delivery date.

  4. Work starts only after you say yes

Nothing is built before you agree to the quote.
